  • Ms. Anne William

    Executive Biography:

Vice President – Papua New Guinea Oncology Nurses Association (PaNGONA)
Nurse Unit Manager – Paediatric Ward, Rabaul Provincial Hospital, East New Britain Provincial Health Authority (ENBPHA)

Ms. Anne William is a highly dedicated and visionary Nursing Officer with a strong commitment to advancing paediatric oncology nursing and improving cancer care services in Papua New Guinea. Currently serving as the Vice President of the Papua New Guinea Oncology Nurses Association (PaNGONA), she has demonstrated exceptional leadership, clinical expertise, and passion for the development of oncology nursing across the country.

Ms. William began her professional nursing journey with a specialization in Child Health Nursing (BCN), which she completed in 2014. Two years later, in 2016, she was appointed as the Nurse Unit Manager for the Paediatric Ward at Rabaul Provincial Hospital, under the East New Britain Provincial Health Authority (ENBPHA). Her experience in paediatric care inspired her to venture into oncology nursing, recognizing the growing need for specialized cancer care for children in her province.

In 2023, Ms. William attended the International Society of Paediatric Oncology (SIOP) Paediatric Oncology Workshop, which strengthened her knowledge and confidence in paediatric cancer management. Following this training, she initiated chemotherapy administration services for paediatric patients at Rabaul Provincial Hospital — a milestone achievement for her province and a first step toward decentralizing cancer care in PNG.

Building on her momentum, she participated in a Palliative Paediatric Oncology Workshop in 2024, which inspired her to establish a dedicated Paediatric Oncology Ward at Rabaul Provincial Hospital. This ward provides isolation, holistic care, and chemotherapy treatment for children living with cancer. Her leadership in setting up this facility has improved access to treatment and created a more supportive environment for patients and families.

Ms. William has also taken an active role in capacity building and mentorship, having trained a Community Health Worker (CHW) male nurse to assist her and Dr. Kalit with chemotherapy administration. Together, they ensure continuity of care for paediatric and adult oncology patients, even in her absence. Her hands-on approach and collaborative leadership style have earned her the respect and admiration of her colleagues and the wider health community.

Despite her achievements, she has faced notable challenges, including widespread fear among nursing staff in handling chemotherapy drugs and concerns about the lack of insurance coverage for health workers managing cytotoxic agents. She advocates strongly for increased safety measures, proper training, and improved insurance policies to protect oncology staff in PNG.

Looking ahead, Mrs. William plans to organize a specialized training program in chemotherapy administration in 2026 for nurses and other healthcare professionals within East New Britain Province. Her goal is to build confidence, competence, and a sustainable oncology workforce capable of delivering safe and effective cancer treatment nationwide.
