The Papua New Guinea Oncology Nurses Association (PaNGONA) exists to unite, empower, and strengthen the oncology nursing profession throughout Papua New Guinea. Guided by compassion, collaboration, and a commitment to excellence, our goals aim to build a dynamic, skilled, and resilient oncology nursing community that delivers quality, evidence-based, and culturally responsive cancer care.
-
PaNGONA is committed to building a strong and sustainable oncology nursing workforce across Papua New Guinea. We aim to enhance the capacity of nurses through targeted training, mentorship, and professional recognition. By investing in workforce development, we ensure that nurses are well-prepared to meet the growing demands of cancer care in both urban and rural settings.
We advocate for better staffing levels, improved working environments, and clear professional pathways that support retention and leadership in oncology nursing. -
Quality cancer care must be grounded in evidence. PaNGONA promotes the adoption of internationally recognized standards, guidelines, and clinical best practices tailored to the PNG context.
We support initiatives that integrate research findings into clinical decision-making, ensuring that every patient receives safe, effective, and person-centered treatment. Through workshops, publications, and continuous education, we empower nurses to translate evidence into everyday practice. -
Continuous learning is essential for professional excellence. PaNGONA provides access to local and international training opportunities, conferences, webinars, and mentorship programs to ensure that oncology nurses stay current with emerging trends in cancer treatment and care.
We aim to cultivate a culture of lifelong learning where nurses are encouraged to pursue higher education, specialist training, and leadership roles within the healthcare system. -
Collaboration is at the heart of progress. PaNGONA actively builds partnerships with healthcare institutions, academic bodies, and professional associations both within Papua New Guinea and abroad.
Through these alliances, we exchange knowledge, strengthen advocacy, and contribute to global conversations on oncology nursing and cancer control. Our collaborations with international partners, including the International Society of Nurses in Cancer Care (ISNCC) and regional bodies, enhance capacity building and elevate the profile of PNG oncology nurses on the global stage. -
PaNGONA recognizes research as the foundation of professional advancement and improved patient outcomes. We support and promote oncology nursing research that addresses local challenges, cultural factors, and health system realities in Papua New Guinea.
By encouraging nurses to engage in scholarly work, publish findings, and participate in academic forums, we contribute to the body of knowledge that shapes national cancer policies and clinical practice.
Our goal is to cultivate a generation of nurse researchers whose work will influence evidence-based decision-making and improve cancer care delivery across the nation.
Our Commitment
Through these goals, PaNGONA strives to build a future where every oncology nurse in Papua New Guinea is educated, supported, and empowered — and where every patient receives dignified, compassionate, and evidence-based cancer care.
