About PaNGONA

1. What is the Papua New Guinea Oncology Nurses Association (PaNGONA)?

PaNGONA is a professional organization that represents oncology nurses across Papua New Guinea. It was established to connect, unite, and empower cancer nurses through education, research, and leadership — ensuring that every patient affected by cancer receives high-quality, compassionate care.

2. When was PaNGONA established?

PaNGONA was formed in 2023 by a group of cancer nurses from Port Moresby General Hospital, with support from Dr. Pauline Rose (Australia) following their participation in the International Conference on Cancer Nursing (ICCN2022). The association was officially incorporated in 2024.

3. What are PaNGONA’s vision and mission?

  • Vision: Providing the best care to all patients affected by cancer.

  • Mission: To connect, unite, and empower cancer nurses through education, research, and leadership to treat, reduce, and control cancer in Papua New Guinea.

Membership

4. Who can become a member of PaNGONA?

Membership is open to all registered nurses, student nurses, and health professionals involved in cancer care, palliative care, and oncology-related services across PNG.

5. What are the membership categories?

PaNGONA offers four membership categories:

  1. Active Members – Registered oncology nurses.

  2. Associate Members – Health professionals and supporters of cancer care.

  3. Honorary Members – Individuals recognized for their contribution to oncology nursing.

  4. Student Members – Nursing students with an interest in oncology.

6. How can I join PaNGONA?

You can join by completing the online membership form available on the Membership page of our website or by contacting your Regional Chair for registration assistance.

7. Is there a membership fee?

Yes. A small annual membership fee applies to support PaNGONA’s activities, professional development programs, and administrative costs.
Note: Membership fees are currently waived for some international training opportunities for financial members.

Training and Education

8. What training programs does PaNGONA offer?

PaNGONA organizes continuous professional development (CPD) programs including:

  • Chemotherapy safety and administration workshops.

  • Oncology nursing leadership and research training.

  • Palliative care and symptom management courses.

  • International collaborations (e.g., St. Jude, CNSA, ISNCC).

9. How can I register for training or workshops?

Visit the Training & Education section of the PaNGONA website for current courses and registration links. Notices are also shared through official email, WhatsApp groups, and Facebook page.

10. Will I receive a certificate after completing a training program?

Yes. Participants who complete PaNGONA-accredited training sessions receive certificates of participation or competency, depending on the course.

Conferences and Events

11. When will the next PaNGONA Conference take place?

The 1st National Oncology Nursing Conference will be held from 16–18 December 2026 at APEC House, Port Moresby.

12. Can international nurses attend PaNGONA events?

Yes. PaNGONA welcomes participation from international oncology nurses, researchers, and partners. Opportunities for collaboration and abstract presentations are available.

Networks and Committees

13. What are PaNGONA’s Special Oncology Nursing Networks?

PaNGONA currently supports six specialty networks:

  • Radiation Oncology Nursing

  • Medical Oncology Nursing

  • Surgical Oncology Nursing

  • Paediatric Oncology Nursing

  • Gynaecological Oncology Nursing

  • Palliative and End-of-Life Care Nursing

These networks promote professional exchange, specialized training, and best-practice sharing across PNG.

14. What are the PaNGONA Regional Groups?

PaNGONA operates through four regional groups – Momase, Highlands, Southern, and New Guinea Islands – each led by a Regional Chair to ensure effective coordination and representation across the country.
